1 〔時間の余裕〕 leisure (time); time to spare; spare time. [=ひま1 1]

●計画案の提出期日が繰り上げになったので十分に検討するいとまがなかった. Since the deadline for submitting the proposal was moved up, I didn't have the time to give it careful consideration.

●彼は席の暖まるいとまなしだ. His busy schedule barely [scarcely] gives him time to catch his breath. | His busy schedule keeps him continually on the move.

・あまり忙しくて睡眠を取るいとまもない. I'm so busy I don't even have time to sleep.

・わが連隊の間断ない砲撃は敵をして終夜応接にいとまなからしめた. Our division's relentless artillery barrage kept the enemy busy all night.

2 〔休暇〕 time off; leave.

●妻が急病ですので 2, 3 日のおいとまをいただきたいと思います. My wife has suddenly taken ill, so I would like to have [ask for] a few days off.

3 〔辞職〕 resignation; 〔解雇〕 dismissal; discharge. [=ひま1 4]

●健康上の理由でいとまを願い出た. I asked to resign for reasons of health.

・使いこみが店主に知れていとまを出された. The manager found out I was dipping into the till and fired me.

4 〔辞去〕 leave-taking; leave; a farewell; good-by(e). [⇒いとまごい]

いとまを告げる take one's leave; take leave 《of…》; say good-by(e) 《to…》; bid farewell [adieu] 《to…》.

●もうおいとまいたします. I must say good-by(e) now. | I must go now. | I must get moving. | I must be moving on. | I'm afraid I must be going [leaving] now. | I should be on my way.

・〔玄関先で〕 すぐにおいとまいたしますから. I only have a moment. | I'm afraid I can't stay [don't have much time].

5 〔離縁〕 divorce.

●夫の暴力に耐えかねた彼女はいとまを取って親元に戻った. Unable to put up with her husband's violence, she obtained a divorce and returned to her parents' home.

1 〔自由に使える時間〕 leisure (hours); spare [free, leisure] time; 《have》 time to spare; spare [odd] moments; 〔合間〕 an interval.

●暇な時[折]に when one is free [not occupied, 《文》 at leisure]; when one doesn't have anything to do; in one's free time [spare time, leisure hours]; at an odd moment

・お暇なら if you are free [not busy, 《文》 at leisure, not otherwise engaged]; if you have any spare time [nothing better to do]; if you are not doing anything.

暇ができ次第取りかかりましょう. I'll start on it as soon as I have a moment [the first free moment I have].

・少しも暇がない have absolutely no time to spare [free time]; have not (even) a moment (to spare); be far too busy; have no leisure at all; be exceedingly pressed for time; be far too busy; be occupied [engaged] in far too many activities

・たっぷり暇がある be not busy at all; have plenty of time on one's hands [leisure, free time]

・彼を訪問したいが, その暇がない. I want to visit him, but I don't have the time [a moment free]. | I'd like to go and see him, but I'm just too busy.

・彼は暇がありすぎて困っている. He has too much leisure [free time] (for his own good). | He doesn't know what to do with his time.

暇にあかして taking advantage [availing oneself] of the abundant time that one has at one's disposal; giving ample time to 《the work》

暇がかかる, 暇を取る take (up) time

・それは完成までに相当暇がかかる. It will take quite a long time to complete [finish].

・それはいくら暇がかかってもかまわない. Take as much time as you like over it. | There is absolutely no hurry (to do it).

・文句をいう暇があったらさっさと仕事をしろ. Get on with your work instead of (wasting time) complaining.

●他の者が遊んでいる暇に彼はせっせと働いた. He worked away while the other people were doing nothing.

●十分暇をかける spend plenty of time on 《a job》; give [devote] ample [much] time to 《one's work》

・いくら暇をかけてもいい. Take as long as you like. | It doesn't matter how long it takes [you take].

・それはかなりの手間と暇をかけないと完成しない. It won't be completed without a considerable investment of time and labor.

●そう長くお暇は取らせません. I won't keep [detain] you long. | I won't take much of your time.

・そんな暇は持ち合わせていない. I don't have the time for that.

・ぐずぐずしている暇などない. There is no time to lose. | We can't afford to hang about.

・買い物に行く暇さえない. I don't even have (the) time to go shopping.

・忙しくて体を休める暇もない. I'm so busy (that) I have no time to rest. | I'm too busy to relax.

・食事をする暇もない. I don't even have time for meals [to eat].

3 〔(商売の)閑散〕 ~な slack; slow; dull; stagnant

●警察が暇なのはいいことだ. That the police should have time on their hands is a good thing.

・商売は暇で暇で困っています. Business is terribly slack. | There is [We have] no business at all.

・今日は(客が来なくて)一日中暇でした. We had no business [customers] at all today. | Business was very slack all day.

4 〔休暇〕 leave (of absence); a vacation; (官吏などの) furlough; 〔解雇〕 dismissal; discharge.

暇をもらう get 《three days'》 leave

・暇を出される 〔解雇される〕 be dismissed; be discharged; 《口》 be fired; be sacked; get [have] the sack

・これ以上働けません. お暇をいただきとうございます. I can't work any longer. I wish to give notice.

暇になる get (free) time; get [become] free (of commitments); be freed 《from work》; 〔商売が〕 slacken; grow slack; stagnate.

●お暇になられましたら if [when] you can find time to spare; when [if] you have a moment; if you are ever free [can ever spare the time]

・年度が明ければ少し暇になります. I'll be a little freer [less occupied] in the new year. | I'll have slightly more leisure (after the start of) next year.

・最近は毎日暇にしている. These days I do nothing every day. | Recently I've been doing nothing [just wasting my time, spending every day doing nothing].

・大手スーパーの進出でうちみたいな個人商店は暇になる一方だ. With the appearance of large-scale supermarkets, little individual stores like ours just go on losing business.
